Sludge treatment

Sewage sludge produced by the wastewater treatment process must be treated and disposed of in a safe and effective manner.
Sludge can be disposed in landfill or in incinerator or lanspread.

The choice between treatment types or disposal routes depends on the quality and the quantity of sludge generated and other site-specific conditions. Only good quality sludge can be spread on land.

Before spreading, the sludge must be treated.

The main options are:

  • biological treatment in order to reduce the amount of organic matter and the pathogens content: composting, digestion, lime treatment, etc.
  • physical, thermal or chemical treatments in order to reduce the volume, to stabilize the sludge and to facilitate its handling : thickening, dewatering, drying, liming…

Treated sludge is also called Biosolid.
